Typical Dental Emergencies

Depending on your specific circumstances, here are some of the most common dental emergencies we treat in our St. Charles office:

Fractured or Knocked-Out Teeth

What should you do if you have a chipped or knocked-out tooth? The first step is to find the missing tooth fragment and then consult our emergency dentist as soon as possible.

Until you arrive at our office, it is possible to reimplant and stabilize fully avulsed (knocked out) teeth. If the tooth does not easily slip back into place, do not force it back in. Meanwhile, place your tooth in a sealed container that is completely submerged in milk, contact solution, or water with a pinch of salt.

Broken Crowns and Fillings

Due to worn teeth or recurring tooth decay, old restorations can cause a dental emergency when you least expect it, Depending on the issue, we can sometimes bond a restoration back into place. Visit us in the next few days, but refrain from chewing on that tooth to avoid any fractures.

Abscessed Teeth

A tooth abscess can be incredibly painful — or not at all. Depending on the severity of the swelling, the gumline abscess usually comes and goes. Fortunately, a gentle root canal treatment can eliminate the source of the infection while saving your tooth and preventing an extraction.

Do You Need Emergency Care?

If you have an emergency, we will schedule you for an appointment and, if necessary, an X-ray. After we have evaluated your tooth, we will discuss your options for treatment.

Please contact our St. Charles dentist as soon as possible if you’re in pain and need emergency care.
